A variety of resources are available to train patient advisors when they join the ARTEMIS Patient Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings. The materials below give a basic introduction and overview of scientific research for the participants to refer to as desired.
The Patient Advisor Toolkit 1 (PAT-1) was created by HIPxChange. It is a step-by-step guide to preparing patient advisors to work with researchers (48). PAT-1 is a comprehensive set of modifiable resources for conducting an orientation with patient advisors, which talks about a multitude of different topics.
This guide was created by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The tools in this resource are meant to help hospitals implement and develop effective partnerships with patients and family members at the organizational level, yet much of the information is also applicable for patient advisors in research settings.
The Syringe Services Program (SSP) Community Advisory Boards: A Framework provides guidance on many aspects regarding the operation of the ARTEMIS Patient Advisory Committee (PAC).
Training material available from Innovations in Recovery through Infrastructure Support (IRIS), builds a recovery research infrastructure through strong community-academic partnerships. The webinars, entitled “Measuring What Matters: Using Data to Evaluate, Develop, and Improve Programs,” introduce some of the core concepts of program evaluation and provides the tools to help individuals measure what matters for their organization. This two-part webinar series helps to build familiarity with the concepts and practice of developing research aims, designing outcome measurement, conducting data collection, analyzing results, and presenting findings.
It is important that when we are doing patient engaged research, that we provide resources that will be beneficial to participants. Maryland Peer Advisory Council (MPAC) is a peer-run advocacy council whose mission is to advocate, educate, and support peers in addition to individuals and families in and seeking recovery. MPAC has a comprehensive Resource Hub including sections such as General Resources, Support Groups and Meetings, Grief and Loss, Emotional Support and Crisis Line, Human Trafficking, Public Safety Reentry and Workforce Development.
It is important that PAC members become familiar to some extent with the PATIENTS 10-Step Framework Community Engagement Tool. A webinar produced by the National Library of Medicine, identifies evidence-based engagement methods throughout different research projects. This resource will help participants define and identify authentic community engagement, while learning the significance of community partnerships in research.
